Do I need a fancy growhouse for my new plants?
Not at all — plants you purchase from us have already undergone the hardening process, this involves gradually transitioning them from the controlled environment of our grow house to the ambient conditions of Perth metro, improving their stability and helping ensure they thrive in their new environment. That said, we still recommend avoiding extremes like heavy rain, frost, or harsh direct sunlight. While higher humidity and good light will encourage stronger growth and earlier flowering, they’re not essential for your plant to do well.
Are miniature species more delicate than standard-sized plants?
It really depends on the species. Many miniature plants are just as hardy as their full-sized counterparts — they simply mature at a smaller size and produce smaller flowers. Some miniatures do have finer root systems, which can make them a little more sensitive to environmental changes, but they’re generally resilient and tend to recover well with proper care.
Why does my plant look small for the pot it's in?
Pot sizes are determined by the strength of the root system rather than the size of the foliage. This means some plants may appear smaller than expected for their pot size, but have well-established roots — setting them up to grow more successfully in your care and reducing the need to repot them any time soon.
When should I repot my plant and into what medium?
We recommend repotting once you notice roots emerging from the drainage holes. While many plants benefit from being slightly rootbound, leaving them this way for too long can lead to stunted growth or rot. As a general guide, only size up gradually — no more than one to two pot sizes at a time (for example, from a 50mm to a 70mm / 70mm to a 90mm pot).
All of our plants are grown semi-hydroponically. Depending on the species, we primarily use a blend of coco chips, Italian-grade clay balls and chunky perlite, and recommend using a similar free-draining mix when repotting. Any reputable hydroponic store will sell these products.
Why do you grow semi-hydroponically?
After plenty of trial and error — and, admittedly, a lot of plant casualties — we’ve found that semi-hydroponics is the most reliable way to grow our plants. It offers a higher level of control over the growing environment and provides better airflow around the roots.
This does not mean the plant you receive must be grown in semi-hydroponic conditions — it can absolutely be grown in more traditional media such as soil or pine bark chips. However, keep in mind that these mixes tend to retain more moisture (which can create a more favourable environment for pathogens if left unchecked), and generally break down more quickly over time.
Do you ship outside of Western Australia?
We are unable to ship plants or cuttings interstate directly due to ICA-34 certification and quarantine treatment requirements. However, we can ship pots interstate.
